Parish Plans - North Dorset

Parish Plans enable local communities to plan for their future.

Parishes are encouraged to set out their vision for their village to guide its future development.  A plan will need to address the needs of the entire community and everyone should have an opportunity to participate in its preparation. Towns can also be involved in their own right through developing equivalent town plans.   Dorset Community Action (opens in a new window) is the initial contact for help with Parish Plans, and the Community Partnerships and other parishes can also help.

A total of 38 Parish and community plans have been completed in North Dorset (including several parishes producing joint plans). As at October 2009, approximately 83% of the population of North Dorset reside in communities that have completed a town or parish plan, as shown in the 'Status of Parish and Community Plan preparation' (pdf, 10kb) (opens in a new window), and with a few more Parish Plans completed since then, the coverage will be more now.

The council has prepared a draft Guidance Note (pdf, 57kb) (opens in a new window) on parish planning. With some of the earlier Parish and Community Plans, the communities have made great progress in implementing the actions from their plans, and the next stage is to update the plans so they include current issues, initiatives and projects. There is guidance,  Updating Parish Plans (pdf, 341kb) (opens in a new window), on how to update and refresh your Parish and Community Plan so its stays 'live'. The new Neighbourhood Plans are not the same as Parish Plans, Neighbourhood Plans are more specifically focused on land use and planning, although a Parish Plan, which is much wider, can provide an excellent context for a Neighbourhood Plan.

Completed plans can be viewed below and a map presenting the status of parish plan completion (pdf, 688kb) (opens in a new window) can be seen. The community plans, based on the market towns and their rural areas, are also included as they are relevant to the market towns, although not strictly speaking parish or town plans.

These plans are large PDF files, so you may have to wait for the file to load:

North Dorset District Council is keen to be involved in the parish planning process and may be able to assist in providing officer support and guidance, if required.
