Promoting equality, diversity and inclusion - Weymouth & Portland Borough Council

Weymouth & Portland Borough Council has been officially recognised as being at the 'achieving' level of the Equalities Framework for Local Government (EFLG).

We recognise that equalities best practice is crucial to ensuring our services meet the different needs of different people within our local communities, and passing this assessment was an important landmark in our journey to improve our approach to equalities.

Passing the 'achieving' level of the assessment means that we have demonstrated the same level of good practice as our close partner authority, West Dorset District Council, with which we are developing a shared service partnership. The needs of our communities will continue to be central to the way services are realigned as this partnership takes shape.

In partnership with Dorset County Council and the other district authorities in Dorset we have developed a single wide  Dorset Equality Scheme (pdf, 183kb) (opens in a new window) with a local action plan (pdf, 101kb) (opens in a new window).

We regularly carry out Equality Impact Assessments (EqIA) to ensure that the services we offer, our policies, strategies and projects are fair and accessible to everyone - view all completed EqIAs carried out by the council.

We work with various public and third sector partners to deliver projects - recent projects have included developing a standard EqIA form for all Dorset councils; an event called Multi Culture Club to help people from diverse backgrounds access services and support; and a project to establish third party hate crime reporting centres in community venues.

The council's Management Committee includes a Brief holder for Equalities and Diversity, councillor Kate Wheller. The council's lead officer for equalities is Emily Cooter, Organisational Development Officer.
