Free school transport entitlement
Some students are entitled to free transport based on safe walking distance from the school and additional criteria.
Who is entitled to free school transport?
The table below shows which students qualify for free school transport based on safe walking distance from the school and additional criteria:

Qualifying benefits / religious faith evidence
If you claim maximum level working tax credits, please ensure you send a recent whole copy of your tax credits letter.
If you are applying on religious or faith reasons, please include evidence to support this claim or advise if this was already provided when you applied for the school place.

Paid transport (Surplus Seat Travel Scheme)
Students who are not entitled to free school transport may be eligible to pay for school transport through the Surplus Seat Travel Scheme.
Students in Years 12 and 13
There is no entitlement to free transport to school or college once a student is over 16, however they may be eligible to pay for school transport through the Surplus Seat Travel Scheme. The council can assist with travel expenses in certain circumstances. Some establishments also provide bursaries to individual students. Please contact the establishment for details.
Home to school route safety
Some students may also qualify for free school transport if all of the possible walking routes from their home address to their catchment or nearest school are considered unsafe for them to walk when accompanied by an adult.
