The Lulworth Ranges and Tyneham village

Find opening times for walking on the Lulworth Ranges and the village of Tyneham as well as information for mariners.

The Lulworth Ranges are part of the AFV (Armoured Fighting Vehicles) Gunnery School, an important training establishment of the British Army. 

They include the coast from west of Kimmeridge Bay to east of Lulworth Cove, as well as the village of Tyneham, Worbarrow Bay and a number of other walks. For operational and safety reasons, access to the ranges is restricted to specific times.

Opening times 2017

We are open to the public at weekends, except for the following:

  • 7 and 8 October 2017
  • 18 and 19 November 2017
  • 9 and 10 December 2017

The exhibitions in Tyneham school and Tyneham church are open from 10am until 4pm.

The gates to the Range Walks open at 9am on Saturday and stay open until 8am on Monday. 

The vehicle access gate to Tyneham opens at 9am and is locked each night at dusk. 

Christmas opening times

We are also open daily from 16 December 2017 to 3 January 2018.

Walking routes

You can purchase a map of Tyneham village and 2 suggested walking routes around the Ranges from Discover Purbeck Information Centre. The Range walks are also shown on Ordnance Survey maps: Landranger 19 (Dorchester & Weymouth) and OL15 (Purbeck & South Dorset).

Coach and minibus access

Coaches and minibuses with over a 12 seat capacity are prohibited from some roads in Purbeck. You must from apply for a free coach and minibus permit at least 5 working days before you travel.

Firing times

Red flags are flown and lamps are lit to indicate live firing times at the Lulworth Ranges, when access is prohibited to the live firing Range Danger Area.

These firing times are subject to last-minute change. Please phone 01929 404819 to listen to an answering machine that gives up-to-date access information.

Information for mariners

The sea danger area extends up to 6 nautical miles offshore between Lulworth Cove and St Aldhelm's (St Alban's) Head. Vessels are asked to keep out of the area at firing times.
