Civic recognition and awards

In every community there are unsung heroes who work tirelessly for others for little or no reward.

They may deliver meals for the elderly, care for family or friends, mark up the football pitch on Sunday morning or produce the annual village pantomime. Their motivation will be as varied as their activities.

At the beginning of every year many of these volunteers have their work recognised by their peers. Members of the public are encouraged by district and borough councils to nominate people within their communities for the good work they do.

The award schemes go under different names but they all strive to achieve a common aim, to reward those who help others:
