Off-road cycling in Purbeck

Cyclists on the Rempstone Ride

When cycling off-road in Purbeck, follow the 'off-road code'

  • stay on track - off-road cycling is only allowed on public/permitted bridleways, designated cycle routes (such as the Sika Cycle Trail and Rempstone Cycle Ride), byways and restricted byways. Cycling is not allowed on footpaths. Not all bridleways will be suitable for cyclists and may have steep or uneven sections. Pedestrians have priority on all tracks

  • know the signs - Public bridleways will be marked by blue arrows or a blue horse and rider. Permitted bridleways may also be marked with blue arrows or permissive path signs. Byways will be marked with red arrows and restricted byways with purple arrows.  Please note: footpaths marked in yellow are for pedestrians only, not cyclists

  • plan your route - Explorer 1:25000 Ordnance Survey (OS) maps are best for this. For Purbeck, maps numbers OL15 (Purbeck and South Dorset) and 117 (Cerne Abbas and Bere Regis) are available from Discover Purbeck Information Centre, bookshops or the  Ordnance Survey (opens in a new window) website

  • be considerate - You will probably be sharing the track with other people and wildlife. Cycling at high speed can be intimidating for other paths users and potentially unsafe. Slow down and give way to walkers and horse riders. Be courteous and friendly. Let them know that you are approaching by ringing your bell or a friendly 'excuse me'. If riding near dwellings, keep noise to a minimum. Respect private property and local residents

  • follow the  Countryside Code (opens in a new window) - respect, protect, enjoy.  Be aware that some tracks may travel through fields with horses or cattle.  If you open a gate, make sure you close it behind you

  • be safe - Always wear a helmet and keep your bike well maintained. Take essential spares (puncture repair kit, pump etc) with you. Remember food, drink, lights and wear bright/reflective clothing.  If cycling alone, tell someone where you are going and what time you will be returning
