Ordnance Survey Maps

For recreational and navigational purposes we recommend 'OS Explorer' Ordnance Survey Maps (at a scale of 1:25,000). These maps can be purchased from Tourist Information Centres, main book sellers and stationers. It is advisable to buy an OS Explorer map if you are planning to do any walking, cycling or riding in Dorset. OS Explorer maps show public rights of way and other public access routes and areas. The maps covering Dorset are:

  • explorer 116 Lyme Regis & Bridport
  • explorer 117 Cerne Abbas & Bere Regis
  • explorer 118 Shaftesbury
  • explorer 129 Yeovil & Sherborne
  • explorer OL15 Purbeck & South Dorset
  • explorer OL22 New Forest

Online Mapping

Dorset Explorer (opens in a new window) is a web based mapping system that provides a range of spatial information including Dorset's public rights of way. It is important to note that the information provided is not definitive and should not be used for legal matters.

The Definitive Map of Dorset's Public Rights of Way

Public rights of way are shown on the Definitive Map which is a legal document. If you have a query about public rights of way that requires a definitive answer you may need to view the definitive map which can be viewed at the Regulation Team office in Dorchester during office hours, by appointment only. Please contact the Regulation Team at least two working days in advance. We are unable to admit visitors without a prior appointment.

Please note that this does not include recorded public rights of way in Bournemouth or Poole. Please contact the relevant Borough council for further information.
