Purbeck District Council Community Governance Review

People in Purbeck recently got the chance to take part in a review of their town and parish councils.

The review, officially called a community governance review, provided an opportunity for people to give their views on whether parish and town councils:

  • reflected the identities and interests of the community in their area

  • were effective

  • were convenient

Interested persons were able to review how their local communities are represented by considering:

  • Creating, merging, altering or abolishing parishes

  • The naming of parishes and the style of new parishes

  • The electoral arrangements for parishes; and

  • Grouping parishes under a common parish council or de-grouping parishes

The review started on 7 January 2013 and briefing meetings for interested persons were held at the Council offices.  People were able to submit their views between 4 February and 30 April 2013.

Purbeck District Council reviewed the consultation responses at a Special Audit and Governance Panel meeting on 3 June 2013.

Draft recommendations were published in the summer and there was an opportunity in the autumn to comment on these.  Final recommendations were published in December 2014 and considered at the Council meeting on 14 January 2014 (item 18).  The resulting changes will become effective on 1 April 2014.
