Sandford Heritage: Cordite, Clay and Calluna

The Urban Heaths Partnership successfully obtained Heritage Lottery Funding and hosted "Sandford Heritage: Cordite, Clay and Calluna" from January 2011 to December 2012. A local community group 'Sandford Heritage Community Group' set up with the aims to be custodians of the work and continue some aspects of the project research and objectives.

This 2 year heritage project focused on Wareham St Martin(Sandford) looking at the cultural history, potteries, Cordite factory and wildlife of the parish. Activities and recording took place on 'Sandford Heath'(part of Holton Heath National Nature Reserve and SSSI), 'Great Ovens(Gore Hill)' and Morden Heaths, in the local schools and of the buildings, pottery and Cordite Factory. The project ran from January 2011 to December 2012.

The heritage project was well supported by the local community in the form of volunteers and attendance at events. The Sandford Heritage project held a celebration event on 20 October 2012 with local children performing in a play depicting the history of  the First School. This event was well attended and well received and launched the project book.

There were 17 video recordings made of people talking about their memories of the area from the past including working in the Cordite Factory. Historic research, oral recordings and wildlife recording by volunteers culminated in 14 local volunteer contributors, alongside the Project Officer, to "Sandford Heritage: History and Wildlife of a Dorset Parish" published in October 2012 with a DVD of memories recorded by project volunteers copies available from UHP Project Office and was made available through local village outlets.

The community developed and edited website  www.sandfordheritage.org (opens in a new window) showcases some of the events, research and recording that took place, on-going articles and upcoming developments.

Sandford Heritage Community Group formed to continue aspects this research and regularly continue to update the website with recent wildlife sightings, events they organise and on-going historical research.

The Community Group have a trial of sales of the booklet in Wareham Tourist Information Centre to hopefully fund a future update and reprint of the booklet.

New members with an interest or link to Sandford Heritage are welcome and new members for the group's Committee are sought for 2014. Contact: lewis@sandfordheritage.org
