Ask Dorset Engagement 2014 - survey results

Ask Dorset 1

The Ask Dorset public engagement was undertaken through the summer of 2014 - trying to find what council services the public felt were most important to them.

Like all public services, Dorset County Council's budget has been squeezed as part of the national austerity measures. So far, the council has worked hard to find these savings and has reduced its overall annual budget by £60 million.
Whilst having minimal impact on front line services, we need to save a further £43 million over the next few years.

Nevertheless, the county council will still be spending £250 million a year on services in Dorset, so the Ask Dorset community engagement campaign was a real opportunity for the public to ensure that the money is spent wisely and to have a positive impact on the things they think are most important.

You told us what mattered to you. Whether it was schools, roads, caring for older people or something else?

The Ask Dorset campaign really took off. We had nearly 7,000 Dorset residents telling us their top priorities for the county council to deliver, via our roadshows and other events, with a further 2,250 completing our online or paper surveys. Finally our Citizens' Panel added a further 2,800 making around 12,000 responses in total.

We are really pleased that the public have responded so positively, and are pleased to feed back the results below.

Results from the overall ASK Dorset engagement

A summary 6 page bulletin, Ask Dorset Public Engagement Results (pdf, 2Mb) (opens in a new window)  has been produced giving the results of the whole Ask Dorset engagement. This bulletin, looks at the overall results,  results by different survey methods, responses to supplementary questions and Roadshow comments. It also looks at what happens next.

Detailed results

People were asked to select their five main priorities from the 20 service areas, either at one of the roadshows, through the county council newspaper, the paper and online survey or through the Citizens' Panel. The table below show the results from the overall survey based on the number of "votes" people gave each area.
