SEND special provision capital fund

The government has committed additional funding to help local authorities with special educational needs and/or disability (SEND). Our plan sets out how we'll invest it.

Local authorities have to make sure there are sufficient good school places for all pupils, including those with SEND.

The additional funding helps local authorities create new school places and improve existing facilities for children and young people with SEND. This has been in consultation with parents and and providers. This funding can be invested in:

  • mainstream schools and academies
  • special units
  • special schools and academies
  • early years settings
  • further education colleges 
  • other provision for children and young people aged 0 to 25

Planning and consultation for good outcomes

Local authorities have to plan how to invest their allocation.

In Dorset we will receive £1,014,953 in total. This means £338,318 each year from April 2018 to the end of March 2021.

We have to consult with parents and carers, schools and other institutions that offer SEND provision so that we invest the funding as strategically as possible.

Consultation with parents and carers, schools and other key professionals in Dorset has confirmed that we don't have enough locally-based specialist provision, particularly for children and young people with higher functioning ASD or social, emotional and mental health needs. 

This means our priority between 2018 and 2020 is to use this additional funding to go towards developing local resourced provision bases across the county. We're also working with partners to provide additional special school places as detailed in our sufficiency plan.
