Sea Road North cycleway

HE_Sustrans logos

Working with Highways England, Bridport Town Council and Sustrans, we will be building cycle links into Bridport town centre.

In 2008 a study was undertaken to identify a Bridport-wide cycle network and upgrading pavements in the Sea Road North area to shared use footway/cycleway will help develop the towns cycling routes.

As part of this work, a new toucan crossing will be installed on B3162 East Road to improve crossing facilities at the Mitsubishi roundabout for cyclists and pedestrians.

Wherever possible, work will be programmed to avoid events in the town.

A3066 Sea Road North

A shared use footway/cycleway along Sea Road north, from the path to Riverside Gardens (near the Mitsubishi roundabout) to St Andrew's Road (near the Co-op), was built at the end of 2017.

This work also included replacing the pedestrian refuge with a toucan crossing between Bredy Veterinary Centre and the Co-op on Sea Road North - the site of the current school crossing patrol. The old pelican crossing near Travis Perkins has been replaced with a pedestrian island.

Mitsubishi roundabout

Shared use footway/cycleway links will be built around the roundabout (pdf, 1Mb) (opens in a new window), by widening the pavement, to link with the Sea Road North cycleway.

The existing crossing on the A35 Sea Road South will be upgraded and a new toucan crossing will be installed on the B3162 East Road, between the Mitsubishi roundabout and the River Asker.

Unfortunately this means there will be delays for drivers using this busy roundabout.

Work on the toucan crossings and at the roundabout will cost £522,000 and is being funded by Highways England.

Phase 1 - Sea Road North link

Starting on Monday 15 January work will start to widen the pavement into a shared footway/cycleway alongside riverside gardens, from the roundabout up to the bridge over the River Asker.

This will be carried out during off-peak times 9.3oam to 3.30pm, Monday to Friday, with temporary lights in use.

Phase 2 - East Road toucan crossing

Starting on Sunday 21 January, there will be five nights of road closures to change the kerb line on East Road to make room for the new toucan crossing. Between 7pm and 7am drivers will be diverted on to A35 Sea Road South - Crown Roundabout - West Bay Road - South Street.

After this - starting on Monday 29 January - there will be six weeks of work to install the crossing. This will be carried out 9.30am to 3.30pm, Monday to Friday, with temporary signals in place. This work is being funded by Highways England.

Phase 3 - roundabout works

To complete the cycle links into the town centre, further shared footway/cycleways will be added around the south-east side of the roundabout and the pedestrian crossing on Sea Road South will be upgraded to a toucan crossing.

The dates for this work is currently being finalised with Highways England.

Riverside Gardens footpath

A new path through Riverside Gardens, to the south east of the River Asker, is proposed. This will be subject to planning permission being granted to Bridport Town Council.
