Small Business Rate Relief


In order to limit the amount of rates small businesses have to pay the government introduced Small Business Rates Relief (SBRR) in April 2005. The scheme has been updated for 2017/18. The government have agreed to extend the doubling of the Small Business Rate Relief (SBRR) scheme for a further year.

If you already receive SBRR this will be extended automatically and you do not need to apply.

If you think you may qualify for SBRR and your Business Rateable Value is below £12,000, please complete an SBRR application form and send it to your Business Rates Office.Download the SBRR application form for Christchurch, East Dorset and North Dorset.

The current SBRR scheme in operation until 31 March 2018, relating to a business's Rateable Value (RV) is shown in the table below:

If your business is over £18000 RV you cannot qualify for SBRR

 If the Government decide to revert back to the previous scheme after 1 April 2018, the old SBRR scheme is shown in the table below;

Please note where a mandatory rural relief or charity relief applies the business will receive the mandatory relief instead of SBRR

SBRR and additional premises after 1 April 2014

A new incentive for growing small businesses was introduced on 1 April 2014.

If you already receive SBRR and you occupy an additional property after 1 April 2014; instead of losing SBRR (which was the rule up to 31 March 2014) you will continue to receive your current SBRR for up to 12 months. If you already receive SBRR and your business occupies another premises after 1 April 2014 you must inform your Business Rates Office of:

  1. your Business Rates Reference Number (shown on your bill)
  2. the address where you currently receive SBRR
  3. the date that you occupied the additional property
  4. the address and postcode of the newly occupied additional property
