Business and sectors

Our economy comprises a wide range of sectors. Compared to the UK in general however, the proportions in the mix show that there is a relatively high dependence on sectors with some form of challenge or opportunity.

A range of factors need to be addressed if our local economy is to develop sustainable economic growth.

Programme aims

  • Increase local business start-ups and survival rates
  • Increase GVA
  • Increase productivity of key sectors

Our plan of action

In order to respond to challenges we used two main indicators of economic growth – Gross Value Added (GVA: the measure of the value of goods and services) and the associated full-time equivalent jobs (FTE). We took information from recent data to provide the following workstreams:

  • inward investment offer
  • Business Account Management programme
  • programme of business support events and services
  • Dorset engineering and manufacturing cluster
  • marine sector development programme
  • SME business support programme
  • town centre businesses support programme
  • tourism and leisure sector support programme
  • sector programmes with interventions specific to sector type and issues
  • growth sector projects
