Christchurch and East Dorset - apply for a taxi or private hire vehicle licence
Vehicle licences are usually granted for 1 year, driver licences for 3 years and operator licences for 5 years.
Licensed operators can only operate vehicles and drivers that are licensed by the same council, for example a Christchurch operator may only operate vehicles/drivers registered in Christchurch.

Apply for a licence
Complete the relevant application form and return it to us along with the supporting documents.
Renew a licence
You can renew a licence online. If you haven't renewed online with us before, you will need to contact us so that we can send you a code and details on how to activate your account.
Renewing a licence after 1 January 2019
If you were granted a licence before 1 October 2017 you will need to complete a Vocational Diploma (NVQ) in Road Passenger Vehicle Driving, unless you can provide proof of completion of an appropriate BTEC or NVQ before 1 October 2017.
If you want to appeal against the new condition relating to BTEC and NVQs, you can do so to the magistrates within 21 days from 1 October 2017.
Changes to Wick Lane taxi rank
From 1 September 2017, hackney carriage drivers must:
- only access Wick Lane Taxi Rank between 6pm and 8am daily via the feeder rank in Mayor's Mead Car Park
- locate their vehicles in the coach bays facing the new electronic signalling device, which will show when a space on the rank is available
- leave the feeder rank in turn to get on the Wick Lane rank
- no longer queue in Wick Lane
Failure to comply may result in legal action, including suspension or revocation of licences.

If you make a booking with a private hire company you should agree the fare before the booking is confirmed as the council does not set these fares.
