West Dorset - apply for a taxi or private hire vehicle licence

Before applying you should read the licensing guidance notes set out the requirements of applicants.

Apply for a driver's licence

You'll need to provide:

  • payment of the licence fee (3 year Licence currently £160)

  • a medical form completed by your doctor

  • Driver Safeguarding Awareness Training - Courses are available from Dorset County Council by contacting Kate Rice on 01305 225726 or by emailk.rice@dorsetcc.gov.uk 

  • Driver Improvement Course certificate (contact our Approved Driving Instructor, Adam Sykes, on 01305 259999 or 07751960300 to make a booking)
  • documents showing proof of right to work in the UK
  • Disclosure and Barring Service form - contact us for more information
  • DVLA driving licence check (photocard or old style paper driving licence, National Insurance number, postcode and utility bill or bank statement for proof of address)

You'll also be required to complete a knowledge test on the geography of the district. You should read the council procedures and conditions as part of the training for your test.

Complete the application form

Complete the driver's licence application form and bring it to your appointment, along with the supporting documents.

Appointment times

Contact us to make an appointment during these times:

  • Weymouth: Monday - 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm
  • Dorchester: Friday - 9am to 1pm and 2pm and 4pm

Apply for a vehicle licence

The vehicle must:

  • be under 8 years old at the time of the licensing
  • have a valid MOT certificate
  • carry a fire extinguisher and first aid kit
  • be fitted with a meter set to the West Dorset District Council tariffs (this only applies to hackey carriages)

Transfer a licensed vehicle 

If you sell or transfer your vehicle you need to let us know by completing the Transfer of Interest in a Licensed Vehicle application form.

Apply for a licence to take bookings for private hire vehicle

You'll need to provide payment of the licence fee.

Complete the private hire operators licence application form and return it to us.

Changes to the combined driver badge

From 1 April there will not be a combined driver badge. New drivers will select either taxi or private hire. It will be possible to apply for both badges and the additional badge will be at a reduced rate.

Existing combined driver badge holders will be required to choose one or the other or receive both a private and hackney drivers badge for one 3 year period. At the end of that 3 year period they will need to choose which badge type they wish to apply for or apply for an additional second badge at a reduced rate.
