Employment and volunteering

Having the right training or experience can help you to prepare for and get a job.

Our directory lists opportunities for training, work placements and work experience.

Gov.uk has information on help with finding a job including skills and training.

Turn 2 Us offer grants to help you towards the cost of training courses.

Volunteering

Volunteering can be a positive way to spend your time and be involved with your local community. Some of the benefits of volunteering are:

  • meeting new people and making new friends
  • feeling a sense of purpose and achievement
  • learning new skills
  • improving confidence and self-esteem
  • staying physically and mentally healthy

Volunteering cannot directly help you to get a job, but many companies recognise the value of work experience and skills learned during volunteering.

Find volunteering opportunities

You can also find opportunities for volunteering at your local volunteer centre:

Do-it has an online directory of volunteering vacancies right across the country.

We have details of some local organisations that offer volunteering opportunities in our directory.

Government support

The Work and Health Programme can help you find and keep a job if you're out of work. The type of help you get depends on what you need.

An Access to Work grant can pay for practical support if you have a disability, health or mental health condition. It covers things like special equipment and fares to get to work if you cannot use public transport. Access to Work can help you to start work, stay in work or move into self-employment.

Council support

Vocational Services may help you if you have a learning disability.

Other help

The Citizens Advice Bureau has advice if you feel you have been discriminated at work because of your disability.
