Chapel Gate roundabout improvements

Bournemouth International Growth Programme logo

As part of the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership's BIG programme, Dorset County Council will be making improvements to the Chapel Gate Roundabout.

Work will start on the £1.65m scheme on 3 July 2017 and will take five months to complete.

The improved roundabout design (pdf, 1Mb) (opens in a new window) will help to relieve congestion on the B3073 to/from Hurn and Parley, and includes:

  • new dedicated left turn filter for westbound traffic from Hurn
  • an additional lane providing eastbound traffic better access to Aviation Business Park
  • new cycleway and footway links into Aviation Business Park

The 40mph speed limit at the current roundabout will also be extended east so that it includes the length of the new dedicated left turn filter.

We'll be able to complete most of the work 'offline' - without interfering with the flow of traffic - and when temporary lights are needed they will be used off-peak, 9.30am to 3.30pm.

We will need some night closures at the end of the scheme when we resurface the area. For the latest news and updates, follow the BIG project blog (opens in a new window)

Unfortunately, the full benefits of this scheme won't be noticed until planned improvements have been completed at Parley Cross as part of the ongoing BIG Programme. (opens in a new window)

The BIG Programme

This project forms part of a £45.2million investment, secured by Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (opens in a new window) through the Growth Deal, funding a series of highway improvements along the A338 and B3073 corridors aimed at facilitating better access into and around Bournemouth Airport as well as unlocking employment land at Aviation Business Park and at Wessex Fields.
