The Chairman of West Dorset District Council

Chairman of Council is the Civic Head of West Dorset District Council.

The Chairman of West Dorset District Council is Councillor Peter Shorland, one of the two councillors for Sherborne West ward. He was elected Chairman by his fellow councillors at the Annual Meeting of Council in May 2017.

Vice Chairman is Councillor Jean Dunseith.

The Chairman nominates a local charity to benefit from various events and occasions that happen throughout the municipal year (May - April) and Councillor Shorland has chosen to support Dorset Mind with a view to increasing the charity's profile within the district in supporting those with mental health issues.

Invitations can be made in the form of a letter or by email. In view of the Chairman's busy schedule, it is essential all invitations are made through the Civic Office giving as much notice as possible. The Civic and Ceremonial Officer will contact you upon receipt of your invitation.

Invitations are dealt with in the order that they are received and as many engagements are accepted many months in advance it is best to plan well ahead. The Chairman is unlikely to be able to accept an invitation at less than 14 days notice.

Once it has been confirmed the Chairman is able to attend your event or function, you will be asked to complete an engagement form providing detailed information about the booking. The information requested is important to ensure that all the arrangements can be made for the Chairman (or Vice Chairman should the Chairman not be available) to attend your function. It also gives the Chairman the opportunity to find out more about the event and your organisation beforehand.

Notes and guidance

The guidance note attached to the engagement form will provide you with useful information when the Chairman is due to visit. Please read this before completing the engagement details.
