Register to vote
If you need to register to vote you can do it online. You will need to provide your National Insurance Number and Date of Birth.
Once you apply online, your application will be sent to the Elections Office. They will send you a confirmation or request for further information by letter or email (if you have provided one) once your application has been processed.

The Register of Electors
The Register of Electors is the list of everyone who is registered to vote. You must be on the register to vote in elections and referendums. There are two versions of the register - the full version and the edited version. Your details will appear on the full version of the register, but you can choose whether or not your details appear on the edited register.
The full register is used for elections, preventing and detecting crime and checking applications for credit. The edited register is available for general sale and can be used for commercial activities such as marketing.

Buy a copy of the open register
You can buy a copy of the open register, sometimes known as the edited register, for commercial or marketing purposes. The open register contains the names and addresses of electors who have not chosen to opt out of the open register.
The cost of the open register is based on the format required and the number of records to be purchased. The cost is set out in legislation and is the same across the United Kingdom. The fees for sale of the open register are:
- in data format, £20 plus £1.50 per 1,000 entries (or remaining part of 1,000 entries) in it
- in printed format, £10 plus £5 per 1,000 entries (or remaining part of 1,000 entries) in it

Changing your details
You can change your name on the Register of Electors by supplying a copy (not the original) of a marriage certificate or deed poll document. This can be sent to us electronically as an attachment to an email or sent in the post/hand delivered quoting your previous name and your address.
Who can register/vote
To be eligible, you must be:
over 18, or reach the age of 18 during the period in which the register is in force - from 1 December to 30 November the following year
a British, Irish, Commonwealth or European Union Citizen
