Beach huts in Christchurch

Christchurch Beaches and Hinterland Management Plan and Mudeford Sandbank Management Plan inform the day-to-day management and outline the council's objectives for beaches in Christchurch.

Mudeford Sandbank

There are 348 huts on Mudeford Sandbank. They are actually more like chalets because they have bunk beds, living quarters and can be slept in overnight between 1 March and 31 October inclusive.

All of the huts are privately owned. They are located on sites licensed to beach hut owners for which an annual licence fee is payable. Each one is subject to our terms, conditions and regulations for privately owned beach huts as detailed in the Mudeford Sandbank Beach Hut Handbook.

Any alterations or rebuilds must also comply with the handbook.

Guidance and application forms:

There is a steady turnover of private huts during the year and they are normally sold by word of mouth, by advertisements (displaying a 'for sale' notice in a window of the hut), or by using an estate agent. Transfer fees are payable on change of ownership. Some owners do let out their huts, but there is no central booking agency. We are not able to pass on names or telephone numbers, however Mudeford Sandbank Beach Hut Association may be able to help with this.

Toilets and mains water, or electricity are not provided in the huts at present but there are public toilets, showers and numerous water standpipes provided on the beach.

There is a beach cafe and shop which stocks day to day requirements such as bread, milk and newspapers, as well as beach goods.

Car parking is available at Mudeford Quay where you can catch a ferry across the Run to the Sandbank, or you can park at Hengistbury Head Car Park and catch the land train that runs throughout the year. You can also cycle or walk or hire a van at the land train terminus.

Cars are not allowed on the beach except during certain times of the year for repairing huts or removing equipment. Permits can be obtained from the Hengistbury Head Visitor Centre on 01202 451618 orhengistbury.head@bournemouth.gov.uk.

Dogs are allowed on the beach but should be kept under control.

Friars Cliff Beach

There are 158 huts on Friars Cliff beach. They are all day huts and specifications can be found in the handbook.

All of the huts are privately owned. They are located on sites licensed to beach hut owners for which an annual licence fee is payable. Each one is subject to our terms, conditions and restrictions. Our Friars Cliff Beach Hut Handbook contains the details.

Huts for sale are normally advertised locally, either privately or by local estate agents. Some owners put a small sign on the hut stating that it is for sale.

Some owners do let out their huts, but there is no central booking agency. We are not able to pass on names or telephone numbers, however Friars Cliff Beach Hut Association may be able to help with this.

Public toilets and water standpipes are situated on the beach and there are two cafes/restaurants handy, as well as a good shop.

Dog by-laws ban dogs from the beaches between 1 May and 30 September and dogs on the promenade must be on a lead. Horses cannot be led, driven or ridden between 10am and 9pm from the Saturday preceding Easter Monday and 30 September (both dates inclusive).

Car parking is available at Steamer Point, Southcliffe Road and Avon Run Road sunken car parks and there is also some street parking. Cars are not allowed on the beach.
