Friends of Lodmoor Country Park
The Friends of Lodmoor works in partnership with the parks section of the borough council to improve the country park for all to enjoy.
The aim of the group is to make the park look more cared for and keep it user friendly by encouraging people to enjoy its special qualities. By establishing work parties and working with other interested groups they hope to carry their aims forward at both neighbourhood level as well as with the involvement of Weymouth & Portland Borough Council.
Community Green Gym opens at the Country Park
Working together, the Friends of Lodmoor Country Park and the Borough Council's Parks Section submitted a bid to Groundwork UK to install an outdoor gym around the Park. The £43,000 grant has been funded through the Community Spaces grants programme and has provided 21 pieces of equipment located at 5 different areas (stations) around a 2km trail and is FREE for all to use.
The full range of gym apparatus will enable every part of your body to get a good work out. All the equipment has instructions on how it should be used to make exercising easier and, the added bonus is, the experience comes without any monthly membership.
Since formally launching a year ago, the Friends have organised:
- annual litter picks
- refurbished a seated shelter
- organised a Feed the Birds' Day, in conjunction with the RSPB
- arranged annual 'Tree Time' walks led by Carl Dallison, the Parks Manager
- organised a number of fund raising events
Projects carried out by the borough council
By establishing a working relationship with the Parks Section, the Friends have had their say on where new seats and bins have been installed. Some fencing posts around the Park have been replaced and lots of tree maintenance work was carried out in the spring. The Friends also raised their concerns about the safety of the bridge into the Park so repairs were undertaken by the council's Property Services section to remedy this.
The Friends have planted Bluebells and Snow Drops along the woodland walk in the country park.
