Where and how to walk your dog

From 1 June 2016, dog control orders in Weymouth and Portland will be changing. To view the changes in full please see the Weymouth & Portland Dog Related Public Space Protection Order 2016 (pdf, 1Mb) (opens in a new window).

The main changes from the previous dog orders are:

  • an extended period of dog exclusion on Weymouth beach - the area of exclusion can be seen in the Weymouth and Portland dog owners guide. (pdf, 2Mb) (opens in a new window)
  • dogs to be on leads along the Promenade and Rodwell trail; and some changed restrictions in recreational areas.  Signage will be in place in these areas to make it clear what they are.
  • any area where dogs are to be kept on a lead is now restricted to a maximum lead length of 2 metres to maintain control.

Borough-wide restrictions continue in relation to clearance of dog faeces, exclusion of dogs in enclosed children's play areas, marked sport pitches, pathways adjacent to roads and when directed to do so by an authorised Dog Warden or Officer.

For further information and details of how you can prevent complaints about you and your dog please see 'What a responsible dog owner can do'.
