Pupil premium

Pupil premium is extra funding given to the school to support more disadvantaged pupils of all abilities.  Your child's school could receive pupil premium funding to go towards supporting you with the cost of different things, like mentoring, school uniform or school trips.

Pupil premium is paid for pupils that are eligible for free school meals, or have been eligible for free school meals in the last 6 years.

The funding is currently:

  • £935 for a secondary age pupil
  • £1,320 for a primary age pupil

This funding can't be accessed unless the child's parent or carer applies for free school meals.

You should complete a free school meal application anyway, even if your child is in reception, year 1 or year 2. This has no effect on your entitlement, but it could provide extra funding for your school.

Apply for pupil premium

Use this free school meals form to apply for pupil premium if you receive a qualifying benefit. Even if your child gets free school meals if they're in reception, year 1 or year 2, you still need to apply so that your school receives the pupil premium funding.

Other pupils eligible for pupil premium

Pupils leaving local authority care

Pupil premium is also paid for pupils that have left local authority care for one of these reasons:

  • adoption
  • special guardianship order
  • child arrangements order
  • residence order

The current amount is £2,300.

Service pupil premium

Pupils can get service pupil premium if they receive a child pension from the Ministry of Defence. The current amount is £300.

Pupil premium payment

Pupil premium funding can only be paid to schools. It can't be paid directly to parents. Schools will agree strategies with their governors to make sure pupil premium funding is used in the most appropriate way, according to the conditions of the grant.

To receive pupil premium funding, the school must make sure the pupil is recorded as being eligible on the January school census.
