Flooding in Purbeck
There is no statutory requirement for the council to provide sandbags. Residents or business owners are responsible for protecting their own property from flooding in the first instance. Residents of properties in areas at risk of flooding are encouraged to make plans to protect their property in advance of any severe weather, such as buying and storing sandbags or equivalent products.
When a flood warning has been issued by the Environment Agency or, exceptionally, due to local surface water flooding, the council will provide sandbags or their alternatives to the public on a needs basis, where there is an imminent threat to life or internal flooding to domestic property (excluding garages and outbuildings) and at the judgement of relevant officers. In a major storm event the council is unlikely to be able to meet all demands. Therefore sandbags will be supplied on a priority basis.
This service is free of charge for residential properties (up to a maximum of 10 sandbags per property, subject to availability). However, it does not extend to the recovery and disposal of sandbags afterwards.
