Our accessibility policy is to ensure this website meets recognised international standards for accessibility to ensure it is accessible to all.

We are fully committed to ensuring this website meets the Web Content Accessibility (WCAG 2.1) to AA standard, Mobile Web Best Practices and and the MobileOK testing standards to ensure people with disabilities are not excluded from accessing our digital information and services.

To this end, we asked Digital Accessibility Centre to undertake a full accessibility audit of this website which we passed in February 2016. View our Certificate of Accreditation.

Plain English

This website has been awarded the Crystal Mark by the Plain English Campaign since 2008 for the clarity of written communication. It is reviewed annually and any issues raised are resolved as soon as possible. If you discover any text that you don't think is well written and easy to understand, please let us know.

Accessibility options

Many of our accessibility options are available through the Readspeaker button, which is situated at the top of most of our pages. This allows you to:

  • Listen to the content - to activate this, click the Readspeaker button, highlight the text you want to be spoken, then click the 'play' button. You can also change the speed the text is spoken in 'settings'.
  • Change the colour contrast - click the Readspeaker button, then click the colour palette and select your preferred colour option

Please note that some sections of our website do not carry the Readspeaker logo. We work with external companies who supply some of our functionality to include this, but this is an ongoing process.

Increasing the page size

You can increase the screen magnification in the browser settings up to 200%. This is done in most browsers from the 'View' menu or by holding down Ctrl and + at the same time.

We have a mobile site which you will automatically be redirected to if you are using a smartphone. This contains exactly the same content and functionality but is optimised to be easy to read and use on mobile devices.

Screen magnification software

If you change the settings and find that this does not magnify the text enough to be useful, then it is worth investigating screen magnification software.

Screen magnification can magnify up to 64 times. Prices vary depending on features, such as whether speech support is built into the program. Some of the more popular products include Lunar, MAGic and Zoomtext.

British Sign Language (BSL) videos of content

Some of our key content pages have been translated into BSL and videos of these translations can be viewed on each of those pages. You can also view all our BSL videos on YouTube.
