Checking your claim - housing benefits or council tax support

When we receive your claim for Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Support we will carry out a number of checks.

Proving identity

It is necessary for everyone claiming Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support to prove their identity. If you have a partner, you will be required to prove his/her identity. You will also have to prove the income of any adults who are not dependant on you living in your household.

Acceptable evidence

Evidence of dependant children

If you have dependant children living with you, you will have to supply evidence to show the amount of Child Benefit/Child Tax Credit you are receiving.

Evidence of other benefit payments

If you receive Department for Work and Pensions benefits, other than Income Support or Jobseekers Allowance Income Based, you will have to supply evidence to show the type and amount of benefit you receive.

These other Department for Work and Pensions Benefits include State Retirement Pension, Incapacity Benefit, War Pension and Invalid Care Allowance.

National Insurance numbers

It is necessary for you to provide us with details of your, and your partner's, National Insurance number.

Your National Insurance number can be found on your National Insurance card, letters from Department for Work and Pensions or payslips and other communications from your current or previous employer.

If you do not have a National Insurance number or you have difficulty establishing your number, then explain this to us and we will give you advice on how you can either obtain this or register for a number.

A National Insurance number consists of two letters, six numbers in blocks of two, followed by a letter, for example: AB 12 34 56 C.

Your National Insurance number will be necessary in order for you to claim housing benefit and council tax benefit, but it is not proof of identity. In addition to your National Insurance number, it will be necessary for you to provide evidence proving your identity.
