Libraries as Cultural Hubs Logo

We are delighted to have secured Arts Council England National Lottery Funding. Working with our partners The Arts Development Company the funding will enable an exciting programme of arts development in the Gillingham and Weymouth Libraries. The "Libraries as Cultural Hubs" programme will take place across 2 years.

This inclusive and community driven programme will reflect diversity in the wider communities. It will span age and gender profiles and will enable:

  • the development of a partnership arts programme with community-led activities such as Fun Palaces and Artist Exchanges

  • paid artist residencies programmes, delivering events for all age groups

  • 16 artist events showcasing programmes for specific community groups

  • arts promoters to have the opportunity to stage shows and exhibitions at the libraries

'Writer - In Residence' programme

Our "Writer - In Residence" programme will be running from January - March 2019. In Gillingham Library the residency will be “This Library is Yours”  with Alan Ward. In Weymouth Library it will be “Weymouth-on-Sea” with Sarah Acton

Alan will be taking inspiration from the library and its setting to develop some new short stories of his own, whilst offering members of the local community opportunities to pick up their pens and take part in creative writing workshops or one to one mentoring sessions. Read more about the project here

Sarah is inspiring everyone to explore their own relationship with the sea, tides and coastline through poetry, story and words. She will invite memories, and use reflections and ideas to create a display in the library. A series of workshops are open to all or for those further down the creative process, one to one sessions are available. Read about the project here
