Guidance for Historic Environment Record Users

Important information for users of the Dorset Historic Environment Record (HER). Read this before you make your enquiry.

Users of the Dorset HER are asked to read the following before making an enquiry:

If you haven't used the Dorset HER before, you may find it useful to read these:

Submit an enquiry

The best way to make an enquiry is to use our on-line enquiry form; this makes it easier for us to process your enquiry and make a speedy response. When your enquiry is registered you will be given a reference number which you can use to track the progress of your enquiry.

What we expect from you

HER users are expected to note the guidance provided here and agree to our conditions for use of HER data.

To protect the archaeological resource it is important that the HER is kept up to date, and you can help by telling us of any errors or omissions, and by giving a copy of any resulting research, reports, publications, leaflets etc to the HER. We expect this as a matter of course from professional archaeologists, historic building specialists, and researchers who carry out most of the work in the county; professional standards require it.

Many of the amateur groups active in Dorset observe best practice in this and other matters, and the archaeological community at large expects that all will aspire to it. If you are involved in archaeology with a local group, perhaps by field walking or metal detecting, your group may already give copies of its reports to the HER.  If it doesn't, we would love to have them.
