Addressing new properties and naming new streets
Addressing new properties or Addressing new properties and naming new streets
To complete the online application you will need - the approved planning application reference number, a location map with the site clearly outlined and a site layout plan that includes plot numbers with main entrances clearly marked. You will then need to pay the fee, quoting the reference number that is generated after submitting the application.
We advise that you as a developer should contact us as soon as you have received planning permission or before any work commences on site. You should not use or supply any naming or numbering scheme without our approval in writing as this may cause problems in the future, particularly with utility companies.
When new properties are built on an infill site and front an existing road which has existing numbered properties, a number will be given. This will follow on from the other properties (in some cases a suffix of the number, ie 1A, 1B). If the surrounding properties are not numbered on the existing road, you will need to supply 3 alternative names for each property.
View our policy for more information.
Naming a street
If the development involves the creation of a new street, you must contact the Town or Parish Council for their approval before you submit an application to us. You should secure the agreement for a range of names that exceeds the number of streets to be named. This is in case an issue is identified with any particular proposal.
Approved changes are then sent to:
- internal council departments
- the Royal Mail
- certain statutory bodies
- the Emergency Services
When new roads are built as part of a development the developer must arrange installation of street nameplates. View our guidance on new street nameplates.
