Addressing new properties and naming new streets

West Dorset

Addressing new properties and naming new streets

You will need your planning application reference number, a location map showing the site clearly outlined, a site layout plan that includes plot numbers with main entrances clearly marked.

As a developer, you should contact us as soon as you start work on site, or earlier.  You should not start any naming or numbering scheme without our approval in writing.

When new properties are built on an infill site and front an existing road, a number will be given. This will follow on from the other properties (in some cases a suffix of the number, ie 1A, 1B).

Naming a street

If a new street name is needed, we must approve it but developers can suggest ideas. Town/Parish Councils will be consulted for their comments.

Approved changes are then sent to:

  • internal council departments
  • the Royal Mail
  • the Emergency Services
  • certain statutory bodies

When new roads are built as part of a development the developer must arrange installation of street nameplates.

Email our Assistant Technician (parking) for advice about street nameplates.
