Recycle for Dorset: Bins and containers
See the types of bins and containers used for the recycle for Dorset service.
Recycling collection - bin and box
The following containers are collected every fortnight from the kerbside:
A 240-litre black wheelie bin with a green lid for paper, cardboard, plastics, tins, cans and aerosols
Approximate size: 107cm/42in (high) x 58cm/23in (wide) x 74cm/29in (deep)
A green recycling box for glass bottles and jars - please keep your current recycling box to use for the new service. If you don't have a recycling box please contact us to let us know.
Household batteries are collected in a small, reusable bag, which should be placed on top of the recycling box.
Each household receives a black 140-litre wheelie bin for rubbish. This bin is collected every fortnight from the kerbside.
Approximate size: 107cm/42in (high) x 48cm/19in (wide) x 56cm/22in (deep)
Food waste collection
Each household receives two brown containers for food waste - a small, 7-litre kitchen caddy and a larger, 23-litre container to be kept outdoors. This is collected every week from the kerbside.
7-litre kitchen caddies range in size but on average they are 25cm/10in (high) x 21cm/8in (wide)
23-litre container - 40cm/16in (high) x 32cm/13in (wide) x 40 cm/16in (deep) including the rear handle
Optional garden waste service
The optional garden waste service uses a 240-litre wheelie bin (same dimensions as the recycling bin) with a brown lid. Households unable to use wheelie bins can apply for a garden waste collection using compostable bags.
Requesting different containers
The 'recycle for Dorset' service is designed to be suitable for most households. An alternative bag and box service is provided for properties that have been assessed as unable to use wheelie bins.
If you feel that there are genuine reasons why you can no longer use the standard containers, you can request different containers.
Flats and communal collections
We have visited blocks of flats and other shared accommodation to look at the options for communal facilities. We try to offer flats a full collection service wherever possible, but this depends on the available space. For more information see our flats and shared accommodation page.
