Dorset Safe at Home scheme

Helping families to keep their children under 5 safe from accidents in the home.

How the Dorset Safe at Home scheme works

We have set up the Dorset Safe at Home Scheme to provide safety equipment to help prevent accidents to parents and carers on low incomes.

The type of safety equipment we could fit in your home includes:

  • cupboard locks
  • safety gates or stair gates
  • fire guards
  • window restrictors
  • bath mats
  • blind cleats
  • corner cushions for tables
  • bath or shower mats

Who is eligible for the Dorset Safe at Home scheme

This service is free to families who receive at least one of the following benefits:

We'll give priority to families where:

  • children are subject to a Child Protection Plan
  • there are Children in Need (as defined under Section 17 of the Children Act 1989)
  • children have a Common Assessment Framework (CAF)
  • children are from traveller or migrant families
  • a parent has a mental health condition
  • a parent has a learning disability
  • a parent has a physical disability
  • the parents are under 18 years old
  • there are three or more children under the age of 5 years
  • there is experience of domestic abuse

If you meet the criteria, a Safe at Home worker will visit you in your home. They will talk about:

  • what type of equipment could be suitable for you
  • how to keep your children safe
  • other relevant services

They will also arrange for the equipment to be fitted.

How to apply for the Dorset Safe at Home scheme

You need to ask a professional who knows you and your family to complete an application form with you. This could be a Children's Centre worker, health visitor, childcare provider or teacher.

You can either:

You'll need to show the professional proof that you receive of one of the eligible benefits. Both you and the professional need to sign the form. Please make sure you read through the:

  • Dorset Safe at Home Scheme agreement declaration
  • guidance notes on the application form

Return the completed form to the Family Information Service, either by email or by post.  Your supporting professional can help you to do this.

We aim to contact you within 2 weeks of receiving your referral form. If we agree that you qualify for Safe at Home, a worker will contact you to arrange to visit you in your home. If you don't qualify, we'll contact you to let you know your application hasn't been successful.

A trained Safe at Home worker will arrange to visit you in your home, at a time that is convenient for you. We'll try to visit you as soon as we can and within 2 weeks of contacting you.

Your appointment

If you need to cancel your appointment, please contact the Safe at Home worker as early as possible. You may have to wait for some time before we can re-arrange our visit.

If you are not in when the Safe at Home worker visits at the agreed time, we can't guarantee you another appointment. Please contact the Safe at Home worker to avoid this happening.

What happens during the visit

The visit will take between an hour to an hour and a half.

During the visit the worker can:

  • talk to you about general home safety advice
  • identify what equipment is needed to make your home safer
  • arrange a Home Safety Check with Dorset Fire & Rescue Service
  • contact Dorset's Family Information Service for you if you need any other information and advice

After the visit, the Safe at Home worker will arrange for an approved fitter to contact you direct for further information.

Fitting the equipment

If you rent your property (excluding social housing) it is very important that your landlord has agreed you can have the equipment fitted. You will need to arrange this with your landlord before the fitting as we can't contact your landlord for you.

The fitter (approved by Dorset County Council) will contact you direct and arrange a suitable time to come and fit the equipment.

It will take between one and two hours to fit the equipment, although occasionally it may take a little longer. Once it has been fitted, you will be asked to sign to say the work is complete.

Maintaining the equipment

Once the equipment has been installed, it is your responsibility to maintain it.
