Moving school part way through the school year

For children wishing to move to a Dorset school from 1 September 2017 onwards.

An in year application for a school place is an application when your child is already of school age and wishes to transfer from one school to another. This may be when you are moving to Dorset, moving house within Dorset, or requesting a change of school for any other reason.

You may make an in year application at any time of the year as there are no closing dates. In year applications will be processed no more than half a term in advance of when the place is required.

Moving within or into Dorset

Make it clear on your application if you are applying from your current address or your new address. We can only base your application on a new address if you have given us appropriate evidence of this address.

Moving into Dorset from outside the UK

If you are a British citizen living abroad or a citizen of the European Economic area, you need to send us:

  • copies of passports or citizen cards
  • proof of a UK address where you will be resident
  • a date of arrival in the UK for yourself and your child

We can process your application as soon as we have received these.

If you are a citizen from a country outside the European Economic Area, you need to send us

  • copies of passports
  • endorsed visas
  • proof of a UK address where you will be resident
  • date of arrival in the UK for yourself and your child

We can only process your application once your child is living in the UK. You must show original passports and visas at the school when your child starts.

Requesting to change school for other reasons

We do not encourage moving from one local school to another school mid year as research shows it can have a negative effect on a child's progress. Consider whether it is necessary to move schools and speak to your child's current school before completing an application.

If your child has already started their exam courses, it is unlikely that another school will be able to match your child's options or exam boards, which may affect their final grades.
