Moving up to or starting secondary or upper school

For children due to start secondary or upper school, apply here from 1 September 2017.

If your Year 6 child currently attends Atlantic Academy, Portland, or Parkfield School and you intend for your child to remain at Atlantic Academy or Parkfield School in September 2018, you do not need to apply for a secondary school place.

If your child has an individual education, health and care plan (formerly known as a statement of SEN), you do not need to complete this application.

Before you apply

Things you need to know before you apply:

  • 31 October 2017 was the closing date for secondary or upper applications. Applications received after this date will be treated as a late application.
    • applications received before the 31 October will be informed of their outcome on the 1 March 2018
    • applications received after this date but before the 28 February will be treated as a late application. Outcomes will be sent on the 30 March 2018
    • application received after the late round closing date (28 February) will be treated as an In Year application
  • you must be a Dorset resident or have proof of a Dorset address to complete this application. If you do not have a confirmed Dorset address but wish to apply for a Dorset school, please apply through the local council admissions team in the area where you currently live
  • we strongly advise that you name three schools on your application, one of these should be your catchment school. Do not name a school more than once: it will not guarantee your child a place at that school or give your child priority over another

How to apply

Step 1 - What you should do before you apply

You should:

Please note:

Some religious schools may require you to complete an additional form. This is an extra form to be added to the application, and not instead of it.

Step 2 - How to apply online

Apply online now

  1. Register and apply online, listing up to three schools in order of preference, one of these should be your catchment school.
  2. You will receive an email once you have submitted your child's school application.
  3. Ensure any required evidence, medical or religious, has been sent to the school admissions team. We can only consider your application based on the evidence you have submitted as of the closing date and we will not chase you for additional information.

Alternatively, you can download and submit a paper application.

Making late applications

Any applications received after the 31 October 2017, but before the 28 February 2018 will be treated as a late application. Outcomes will be sent on the 30 March 2018.

Submitting a late application greatly reduces your child's chance of obtaining a place at one of your preferred schools. This will be the case even if you live in the catchment area and/or have older children already attending the school.

Applications received after the 28 February 2018 will no longer be co-ordinated and will be dealt with as In Year Transfers. They will be processed as quickly as possible after the late round offer date (30 March 2018) as they are received.

Changing submitted applications

If you wish to change your application once it has been submitted, you will need to complete a change of preference form. Please be aware any changes made will be considered in the late round.

Please note we base applications on the information provided by the relevant closing date. If you have moved address after the 31 October we will base your application on the address you were living at as of the closing date. This is also the case if you move into a feeder school after the closing date.
