Starting a new business
Many people dream about starting a new business in Dorset. However, the numerous things to consider when starting a business can deter potential entrepreneurs. Dorset councils and their partners offer an abundance of support to enable you to make your dreams into a reality.
Business Link and GOV.UK
Business Link previously had a physical presence in Dorset that provided face to face information, advice and support to local companies. However following national restructuring the Business Link service is only available through a call centre (0300 456 3565).
A new GOV.UK website (opens in a new window) has been created to find government services and information. GOV.UK replaces the previous Directgov and Business Link websites so includes valuable information on starting a new business, which it breaks down into the following categories:
- Research your market
- Develop and plan
- Find partners and suppliers
- Set up your business
- Get funding
Support is also available through the local authorities, including the Property Pilot commercial property database (opens in a new window) which maintains a database of most of the commercial properties in Dorset and offers a free service for new and existing businesses to find suitable commercial property. There is also a wide range of information available online and support may also be available through family and friends.
