South West Mountain and Moorland Leader Training Scheme (SWMMTS)

The moorland and mountain areas of the South West are some of the best places to walk in the UK. This makes them popular with leaders introducing young people to walking and camping.

What is the SWMMTS?

Many leaders only aim to lead groups in the South Western region so don't need a national walking leader qualification. This scheme addresses the need for appropriate training and assessment for these leaders.

The scheme aims to develop a range of skills and knowledge needed to manage groups safely. This could be for day walks or multi-night trips in Summer or Winter conditions.

Who can use the scheme?

The LA run and control the scheme but it is up to the committee representative of each LA to put the scheme in place. Many organisations use the scheme and syllabus such as:

  • local authorities (LA) employees wishing to lead young people
  • organisations who want to certify their own staff*
  • voluntary organisations
  • the Duke of Edinburgh's (DofE) award
  • schools and colleges
  • further/higher education establishments

*The LA will accept no liability for use outside their legal areas of responsibility.

What does the scheme involve?

The scheme has a range of levels so participants can practise challenging terrain. This helps leaders to develop their skills gradually and makes sure they have the right skills and experience to lead young people.

Find more information on the different levels in the syllabus (word, 473kb) (opens in a new window).

For any queries, contact the SWMM Scheme Manager.
