Walking dogs on beaches

Many people enjoy walking their dogs on Dorset's beautiful beaches, but please note that regulations apply on some beaches.

Please note dog walking restrictions may additionally be imposed by the parish councils or private land owners.

Dogs are allowed.


Beach Office 01202 451781. Between 1 May and 30 September dogs are allowed to the west of Durley Chine and east of Fisherman's Walk up to Hengistbury Head.

Bridport area

Burton Bradstock Beach-no dogs between 1 May and 30 September, except on East Beach. West Bexington Beach-dogs allowed in a restricted area. Eype Beach-dogs permitted. West Bay-no dogs allowed between 1 May to 1 October, except in the port area where they must stay on a lead. Cogden-dogs allowed.

Between 1 May and 30 September no dogs on Avon Beach, Friars Cliff Beach and Highcliffe Beach between Groynes H4 and H8. Dogs are allowed between the wave wall at end of Friars Cliff Beach and Groyne H4 at Highcliffe Beach, Mudeford Sandbank and Gundimore Beach.

Lyme Regis

Between 1 April and 31 October no dogs on Lyme Regis's front beach and on leads for the rest of year. Dogs allowed on Monmouth Beach, Cobb Gate and East Beach.

Charmouth West Beach, 1 May - 30 September no dogs as far as the bridge at the end of the prom, from which point dogs are allowed on leads westwards towards Lyme Regis. Charmouth East Beach, no dogs in July and August between 10am-6pm. Seatown Beach-no dogs.

No dogs from 1 May to 30 September on the main beaches, but dogs are allowed on the beach all year round at Branksome Dene and at the west end of Sandbanks beach.


Various restrictions apply at the Studland beaches - for further information download the Beach Guide (pdf, 29kb) (opens in a new window). Dogs are allowed off-lead all year at Kimmeridge, Worbarrow Bay, Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door and Man O' War Beaches. Find more information about Purbeck beaches.


No Dogs from 1 May to 30 September on the main beach, but dog walking is allowed  elsewhere (opens in a new window) all year.


Dogs are excluded from Greenhill Groyne to the pavilion end of the Beach from Good Friday to 31 October, there is a dog exercise area at the pavilion end of the beach which has no restrictions all year round.
