The Xchange for families of children who are disabled

An interactive news and information network for children who are disabled and their families.

We created the Xchange (opens in a new window) network in response to:

  • requests from families of children and young people who are disabled
  • consultation with the Dorset Parent Carer Council

The network has over 1200 member families across Dorset. Our members make regular use of our website, and also receive a number of member benefits. This includes our monthly newsletter.

Why is it called The Xchange?

The scheme is all about 'exchanging' news and information needed by:

  • families
  • Dorset County Council Children's Services to help them create better services for families

Member benefits

Members have access to information on a range of topics, and will be entitled to a number of benefits.

These include:

  • children and young people registered on the Xchange will receive the Dorset Max Card discount card
  • families can receive a monthly e-newsletter. This contains local news, clubs, activities and more
  • carers can create an online Care Passport for use with service providers. They can also access the 'Carers in Crisis' emergency card scheme

The "Carers in Crisis" emergency card and fob brings peace of mind. It means that in an emergency, anyone finding the card on you can call the carers emergency call centre. This is a 24 hour service. The call centre staff will action your agreed emergency plans. These will happen even if you are unconscious or unable to speak.

Membership fees

Membership of The Xchange is completely free. You can join if:

  • you are the parent/carer of a child who is disabled - see definition
  • both you and your child live within Dorset (this excludes Bournemouth and Poole)
  • your child is under 19 years of age
