Children's Services

Outcomes for children

Our outcomes underpin every aspect of the work within Children's Services.

Our outcomes are for children and young people to:

  • be safe wherever they are
  • confident and successful learners who can achieve personal success as they grow into adulthood
  • stay in Dorset and make a positive contribution to the economy

We also want:

  • families to be resilient, develop positive relationships and have good futures
  • children, young people and families to know what it means to be healthy and adopt lifestyles that promote this

Areas of work

The Director for Children's Services is Nick Jarman (interim).

Schools and Learning Service

Our Assistant Director is Andy Reid. His work includes:

  • improvement support for early years settings, schools and Governors
  • support for children who are disabled and those with special educational needs (SEN)
  • educational psychology and behaviour support service
  • supporting young people aged 16+ to stay in education and training
  • school transport
  • alternative education like learning centres and home education
  • school attendance and exclusions
  • Dorset Music Service and the Duke of Edinburgh Award
  • supporting agencies to use the Common Assessment Framework to meet needs

Care and Protection

Our Assistant Director is Kevin Peers. His work includes:

  • children who are disabled and social care
  • child protection and safeguarding. This includes a single point of contact to report a concern about a child
  • children in care and care leavers and care leavers
  • support for/recruitment of foster carers
  • support for adoptive parents and those considering adopting
  • quality assuring safeguarding practice
  • management of safeguarding allegations
  • Child Death Overview Panel support
  • Dorset Young Carers Service
  • Family Focus (alternatives to care team)

Commissioning and Partnerships

Our Assistant Director is Claire Shiels. Her work includes:

  • performance and management
  • commissioning, contracts and complaints
  • Family Partnership Zones; this includes Children's Centres and youth provision
  • Children's Services Board support
  • workforce planning
  • change management
  • the Family Information Service
  • Outdoor Education Service
